Great Lakes Traffic Services Inc. History

Great Lakes Traffic Services, was first started in September of 1968, under the name of Great Lakes Motor Freight Bureau, Inc. Back when we first started we worked maintaining individual transportation tariffs that the trucking industry used to set fees and rules to do business with. We also maintained our own bureau tariffs with the Illinois Commerce Commission by which trucking companies joined our tariffs and collectively set the rates and charges by their participation.

A lot has happened since the early days. Remember 1980 when deregulation came into being. We sure do! That's when we became Great Lakes Traffic Services, Inc. We knew that deregulation would change things for Industrial America Forever. Knowing what we knew about actual cost Great Lakes felt that we could do a great service to the industrial companies by negotiating favorable pricing with the transportation industry on their behalf.

Today, Great Lakes Traffic Services is still serving both trucking and industrial companies. Of course, things are much different today. Industrial companies are more involved with "Just in Time" service with less inventory. Transportation companies are competing to fight off high cost relating to personnel and rising fuel costs. However, the basic principles still apply today as before.

Our specialty today is working with industrial companies in development and maintenance of transportation programs. Not only do we address the problems associated with transportation, we also handle situations much like a Corporate Traffic Department would. We address all aspects of transportation from operational to the economics in the best interest of all our clients.

In the future , we expect the balance of power to shift to the transportation industry. We already are seeing changes that are penalizing industrial companies in hidden tariff items. These tariff trap items can add large amounts to an average freight bill.
